Kiley

After I drive Luke back home, I go over to Rachel’s house, since I know that she’s going to call me and harass me again, anyway. I knock on the door and she answers in her pyjamas. To be fair, it is after ten o’clock, but I figure it’s the only thing I have to razz her about, so I do.

“You’re going to be a great senior citizen.”

“At least I’m not fucking with my patient’s head.” She teases. If it were anyone else, I’d walk out and never speak to them again after that comment, but I know that Rachel is one hundred percent not serious.

“Am not. And thanks so much for the call earlier. Thankfully he’s not as nosey as you are, so I didn’t get the third degree.”

“If you had told him the truth when you had the chance, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” She says righteously.

I give her a self-serving, indignant frown, but say nothing.

“So, did you tell him?”

“No.” I say, still indignant.

“What are you afraid of?”

“What do you think, stupid? That he’ll hate me and never want to see me again.”

“So lying to him is much better. This way he’ll never know the truth, and you can go ahead and fall for him, and it’s safe. You never have to commit, and you can just continue having this completely unhealthy relationship for as long as you want to.”

I sigh, frustrated. “First of all, I’m not in love with him, second of all, it’s not really his business, and third, how is he ever going to find out, except if you tell him?”

“But you like him. A lot.”

“I love it how you skipped the other points.”

“Let’s start with the first.”

“Okay, yes, I like him. He’s a great guy and we have a great connection. But I’m not in love with him.”

“But you might fall for him…and then what are you going to do.” She says as more of a test, a statement.

“I’m not going to fall for him, Rachel. He’s a patient. I just got out of a serious relationship. I just…enjoy his company. We have a lot in common. And I’m learning more and more about what we have in common each time we chat.”

“Don’t you think he’s going to be super pissed when he finds out, months down the road, that you lied?” Her voice is sober, and it makes me stop and think.

My eyes go to my hands as I pause. After a beat, I say. “You’re right. I need to tell him.”

“You like him, and you want to stay friends with him, right?”

“Yeah.”

“A healthy relationship is not based on lies, Kiley. That’s relationships one-oh-one, and you, of all people, should get that straight up.”

I smirk, seeing how right she is. “I know. I’ll talk to him tomorrow. I’ll tell him before this gets messy.”

“It’s for your own good. You can’t get away with being a wallflower, relationship-wise, forever. You’ve got to tell him why you lied and tell him that you’re not looking for anything, but all the same, you’re enjoying his friendship.
